Texas water future now in voters’ hands

As you know, 2013 was a big year for water issues in the Texas legislature. Just a few weeks ago, they passed a series of measures, including SJR 1, HB 4, and HB 1025, which authorize taking $2 billion from Texas’ “Rainy Day Fund” to launch a fund to offer low-interest loans for Texas water supply projects. The funding measures will be up for voter approval in November.

If you’re even remotely connected to the water industry, I don’t have to tell you how badly the prolonged drought is affecting the Texas economy in terms of water shortages for agriculture, businesses, and municipalities. This new fund will help provide capital for water systems and providers to make the upgrades, repairs, and technological improvements to help reduce water loss and increase efficiencies.
